Kurt's Corner

Dear XIKAR Customers and Friends:
In honor of Father’s Day, I want to take a minute to thank my father for helping make me the man that I am today. In my childhood, Papa (as I still call him) was very strict about work, but liberal regarding life’s adventures and experiences.  His goal: to create in us a sense of adventure, with independence and responsibility.  I think he succeeded greatly!  He succeeded the old fashioned way, by sharing, and by engaging us in his passions for art, history, travel, cars (racing and collecting) and reading.

By the end of high school, he had taken each of us on several art and history tours, to China, Ethiopia, Russia, Egypt, Europe and Central America, where he drug us in and out of museums and churches (which was even a regular excursion at home in Kansas City.  By the way, as an "expert" in the world's museums, I can tell you that the Centro Leon in Santiago, Dominican Republic, created and donated to the Dominican people by the Leon Jimenez cigar family, is one of the worlds great museums, right in the heart of cigar country,  it's a must see visit!)
I share all Papa's passions except cars (reliability is good enough for me), but particularly history, travel and reading.  I also share his love for cigars!  For as long as I can remember, my dad always smoked two cigars a week, one Saturday afternoon and another on Sunday. On Saturday mornings, he would take me in to see Fred Diebel and get a couple of cigars. I loved the smell and the easy warmth of the place and the people - we now call that camaraderie.
When Cigar Aficionado first came out, I decided to get him the inaugural issue as a birthday gift - that’s what really got me to start smoking cigars. I remember looking at the magazine and thinking, “Wow, there is really something to this.”  Is there ever!
After retiring, my dad has worked at XIKAR since 2003. He inspects returns and “tests" cigars. We all love having him around for his help, and his stories and "observations".  (I think people of a certain age have earned the right to have those comments kindly dubbed "observations"!)
I have my dad to thank for my sense of adventure, austerity, curiosity, and of course, my work ethic. These traits have all had a great impact on my life and reflect the essence of XIKAR. Without the values my dad has instilled in me, XIKAR wouldn’t be where it is today. I hope that after this Father’s Day, you can reflect on your father and how he shaped your life. As you smoke a cigar, I hope you do it with him, in person or in spirit!

XIKAR U: How to Light with a Soft Flame

Featured Product: XIKAR Purofine Premium Butane
Many times, smokers choose a butane based on how many times it has been refined. A more accurate measure is the amount of impurities in the fuel. Over time, impurities from bad fuel will build up in your lighter blocking the flow of butane and ultimately causing it to malfunction. Using a high quality fuel is very important to help keep your lighter functioning properly for years of use.  XIKAR’s Purofine Premium Butane has less than 15 parts per million of impurities--the cleanest available. Its low level of impurities helps keep your lighter functioning properly ensuring your lighter will be ready for action anytime you are ready to relax with a smoke.
Why to use XIKAR Purofine Premium Butane:
- Has less than 15 parts per million of impurities—the cleanest available.
- Bad fuel use is the number one reason lighters get returned for warranty.
Not Using XIKAR Purofine Premium Butane? No worries!
- Drain your lighter completely of fuel and air.
- Use a can of compressed air to blast out the bottom and top of your lighter of any impurities that might be built up in your lighter.
- Refill with high quality butane, wait a couple minutes for the butane to warm up then ignite!

Stumping HR 1639!
XIKAR President Kurt Van Keppel, pictured at the Capitol with Christy Sammon, Legislative Director of the IPCPR trade association, storms the Hill once again stumping House Resolution 1639, to protect premium cigars from the nefarious FDA.
"The bow-tie camo uniform very effectively conceaed my true intention of 'getting things done.' They never knew what hit 'em!" says Van Keppel. HR 1639 continues its forward march through Congress.

XIKAR's 6th Hall of Fame Inductee

Our second XIKAR For Life Hall of Fame inductee of 2012 is Jay Bitzer of Dallas, TX. Bitzer is a Commercial Photographer of 32 years and when he isn’t in the studio shooting, he is at Elite Cigar Café in Addison, TX.
Bitzer is a former pipe smoker turned cigar enthusiast close to ten years ago after buying a sailboat. With a very impressive collection of XIKAR products today, he even forgets which products he already owns. Just the other night at an event at Elite Cigar Café, Bitzer purchased a new lighter only to get it home and realize he already has that exact model/color of lighter in his collection.
Bitzer often gets grief from his friends for carrying around 5-6 XIKAR items on him at all times. He always has his 744 Cigar Knife, a couple punches, two lighters and a Xi cutter filling his pockets. “As a Photographer, it’s always good to have back-ups and some extras to share with others,” says Bitzer.
“I love XIKAR as company for its philosophy, people, warranty and support of the troops. I have used their warranty a couple times over the last ten years and it was seamless with not even a question asked,” says Bitzer.
We’re proud to welcome Jay Bitzer into the XIKAR For Life Hall of Fame for his exceptional support and commitment to the XIKAR For Life lifestyle. His passion and support for XIKAR makes him an outstanding member of XIKAR Nation that we are proud to have represent our company.
“I normally do not commit to just one company but it’s safe to say that I am pretty well hooked on XIKAR,” says Bitzer.

XIKAR Nation
